11 may 2008 observations

...sunday evening... in a space enclosed by tall chestnut and plane trees... a shady spot in which few people stop... but some pass by on the way to somewhere else... or while walking for the exercise... or for the pleasure of it... (or so i imagine)...

...while i ate an evening picnic a small worm-like creature (about 10-20 millimetres long) descended from the tree above... suspended on a filament extruded from its body... and two more insects (spiders, each about two millimetres diameter) hung a few centimetres below on filaments attached to the worm... are the spiders and worm consciously collaborating, i wondered, or are they exploiting each other, consciously or not?...

20:08 Viaduct Pond
dozens of tall trees on the slopes surrounding the pond... a service vehicle, a kind of gardener's jeep, moves slowly in the scene before me so as not to disturb people walking... (as if at a funeral or other ritual)... rhythmic music in the distance and the slow wail of an emergency vehicle in the surrounding city... voices (speaking from various directions) animate the still air... the pond is already covered with the leaves of water lilies (each a leaf-diameter or two from its neighbours)... May flowers in bloom... and all the trees are now in leaf...

...a tall and bulky man, with a woman about 2/3 of his height and about half his weight, walk by... they seem happy with each other despite their difference in size...

...the light is beginning to fade... and the air is cooler now... so i pull on a pullover... while listening to an owl calling from about 200 metres away... it calls repeatedly... and i decide to go home...
