11 October 2008 autumn sunshine

near Vale of Health

...scores of insects hovering in sunshine and shadows... gossamer threads between leaves of grass still wet with morning dew this Saturday afternoon...

...leaving a bus at the highest point i stepped over a fence to walk or skid down a steep and muddy path towards this valley where i sit looking westward towards the sun in a grove of tall trees... few leaves have changed colour, or fallen, though the air has been cooler for several weeks...

...a single leaf, curly and brown, falls through the space before me and a squirrel hops close to this seat and disappears but i didn't see where it went... a young man stands still and takes a photograph... and now he continues to stand and look about...

...is this the earthly paradise?...

...i walked slowly without a destination in mind and found myself in an area of fallen trees and impenetrable undergrowth... a path i looked for has disappeared beneath nettles and other plants that grow wild here...

...as I write while seated in a wood beside pond 2 a woman with a small boy attempts to overcome his refusal to walk - he wants to be carried and resists her patient efforts to interest him in the fallen leaves or in the water, or anything... eventually she succeeds and they both walk slowly away... i imagine he is learning how to live in this world as other than a tyrant...
