30 december 2008 the universe is alive

Parliament Hill

...a cold, still, and misty day... the city is hidden except for those buildings that are within a mile or so of this pathway (from which several miles of the city are usually visible)... the ground is frozen quite hard and there are many people about, walking briskly in the frosty weather... and tomorrow is the last day of the year...

...a man walks down hill through the tufted grass... two small children run ahead of him... while other adults and children climb slowly up the hill, stopping now and then to look at the mostly invisible city behind them...

...now two children begin to climb a tree while an adult helps them to find footholds... they seem unused to climbing trees and perhaps to all such adventures common long ago... though they may well be able to use digital circuitry that adults may find difficult to learn...

...a dog (wearing a green jacket) drops a green ball in the grass and runs away into the distance in search of someone... a man appears from the bushes behind me and the dog now runs to him and then finds the ball again... the man throws the ball about 70 metres and the dog runs to it... now the man climbs high into the tree while the dog comes to inspect or to smell the space immediately behind the seat on which i am sitting... then it runs as fast as it can to the tree but seems not to see the man... yet they seem, man-and-dog, to be in constant communication, though often 100 metres away from each other... is the dog short-sighted?...

...the man with dog passes close to me but does not exchange glances... another man passes by and looks to see what i am doing... he nods and smiles... a woman who is bent walks slowly by... she uses a walking stick and has a black dog who keeps close to her... she doesn't look to right or left but only at the ground...

...yes the universe is alive and this is it...
