26 july 2020 for your own good
when we look at the name 'anarchy' we may not realise what a profound
change it is . . . that there was once a time when autonomy belonged to
kings and queens . . . but now that we are numerous and also equipped
with automation the few can share their authority with the many . . .
i can remember many occasions when this freedom was resisted or not seen
to be necessary . . . but it is . . . as John Cage said 'I have lost
friends over this question' . . .
this is the invisible principle of what is called 'freedom' which
involves giving autonomy to everyone . . . and also the principle of
'caring' which by now seems to becoming a new universal and is more
spoken about than done . . .
'for your own good' is said when people want to be helpful . . . but
they do not realise when they ask us to give up autonomy how big a
change of life that this involves . . . and they may take away
friendship and love . . .
